We’re just back from presenting a workshop on Dealing with Change at Your Library, and I’m struck yet again by the phrases library folks use to describe certain kinds of uncomfortable situations. Here are a few suggested translations: “We need better communication” means “I disagree with what I’m hearing.” “We need more training” means “We can’t agree on how this should [...] There was a new version of the “Shift Happens” video on media convergence posted to YouTube yesterday. If you think the world we library workers have known forever is imploding all around us, watch this video for confirmation! – George I visit a LOT of libraries, and in preparation for those visits, I look at a lot of library websites. Unlike many other destinations, libraries seldom establish a context for the visitor by mentioning their environs or describing how the library fits into the surrounding community. This intrigues me.
